“meadow beneath the ridge (disputed)”
Where it comes from
possibly 'áss' (ridge/god) + 'lo' (meadow)
Fun Fact
The city was renamed Christiania after the Danish-Norwegian king Christian IV in 1624, kept that name (spelled Kristiania from 1877) for about three centuries, and officially reverted to Oslo in 1925.
