Where it comes from
uncertain, possibly Etruscan origin
Also known as
Antonio (Spanish/Italian), Antoine (French), Anton (German/Slavic)
Fun Fact
The Roman general Mark Antony carried the original Latin form of this name, and Saint Anthony of Padua's later fame helped spread it widely through Christian Europe. The often-heard 'Anthony' pronunciation with a hard 'th' sound is actually a spelling-driven mispronunciation in English: no 'h' sound exists in the name's Latin root at all.
