Ptarmigan

Scottish Gaelic
“native Gaelic name for the grouse-like bird”
Where it comes from
tarmachan
Fun Fact
The silent 'p' was added in the 17th century (it first appears in print in 1684, in a work by the Scottish naturalist Robert Sibbald), apparently to make the word look more classically Greek, even though the root is actually Gaelic.
